Manchester students: In a break from the usual format, this topic is about playing with the latest technology, and thinking about its implications in society. Read this page now but comment after the session, by the end of week 4 (22nd Feb).

Anyone else: If you’re not taking UCIL25002, there’s a self-study version of this topic here: Non-Manchester Topic C: New technology — enjoy :)

Doing

There is no reading this time, only doing. Your experience of technology is as valuable as anyone else’s! DigiLab is run by the Library (it won an innovation award last year!) and it’s all about experiencing technology, so we’ve arranged a field trip. We hope you will enjoy it.

The DigiLab fieldtrip is on Thu week 3 (14th Feb), 10am-4pm in the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons.

Read the questions at the end of this page before you go.

Come any time that works for you, try things, and talk to people. Course staff will be there but you are free to explore on your own. Visit for at least an hour, then return to this page and add a comment.

Going to DigiLab will add some exciting technologies to your existing experience, help you explore your ideas about ‘digital society’, and think of topics for the digisoc3 assessment.

Watch the video to find out what’s on, and what to do while you are there. There’s also a transcript of the video with links to everything mentioned.

What do you think?

Choose one or more of the questions below to think about while you visit DigiLab. Afterwards, leave a comment on this post with your thoughts. If you want to talk about anything not covered in these questions, go for it! :¬)

  • How do you think the growth and popularity of VR will have an impact on society?
  • Can you think of any teaching and learning applications of any of the technology you’ve seen today?
  • What technology had the greatest impact on you and why?
  • How could some of the technology you’ve seen today be used for good or evil?
