Manchester students: work through this page and leave a comment before Mon week 11 (29th April).

Now you are approaching the end of the Digital Society module, it’s time to take stock by looking back to the beginning of the course and also looking forward beyond the module. You will have the chance to reflect on what you have learned, the skills you have gained and how this knowledge and these skills can make you ‘more employable’ for a digital future, whatever career area you choose to go into.

Reading

The ‘Future Work Skills 2020’ report published by the aptly named ‘Institute for the Future’ (IFTF) analyses some of the key disruptive drivers that the authors contend are reshaping the landscape of work, as well as identifying key work skills needed now (the report was published back in 2011!) and in the near future.

‘The Future of Jobs: Employment, Skills and Workforce Strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution’ (Executive Summary), published by The World Economic Forum in January 2016.

What do you think?

After reading the above, try to answer these questions:

  • How well equipped do you feel you are for a career in a digital world?
  • Is there anything you can do now to prepare for a future career in a world in which technology will continue to evolve and disrupt sectors and demand for skills?

Activity

During the session, you will work in pairs on a task that relates to skills and jobs that link with the Digital Society module.
