Unholstered is a multi-section story produced by the Texas Tribune that takes a look at police shootings across Texas. I think this is effective use of data as a storytelling tool. The data visualization allows the audience to get a solid overview of police violence in Texas, which lays the groundwork for the subsequent sections that dig deeper into specific pieces of the police violence in Texas. I also think it’s an innovative way to present short snippets of information that keep the audience engaged. I really appreciate how this approach makes nuanced information easier to understand. For example, when they were representing 50% of 17% of the cases where race was known. Personally, I find it hard to visualize percentages of a percentage, and this made it very accessible.
