One of my favorite projects this semester was the textual analysis of What’s Behind Door Number 10101?. For that project I wanted to what cothes would trend in the future. I compiled many reviews about the Spring 2021 ready-to-wear fashion shows and put them into a word cloud. This allowed me to see what type of fabrics, colors, and styles were set to trend depending on how many designers included those things in their collections.

For the final project I wanted to build off of this idea of trend forecasting, but for menswear in spring 2021. Instead of the previous project, where only a few reviews were considered in the word cloud, every menswear review was included from Vogue Runway. This allowed more variety to the spring fashion season, which personally made this project more exciting.

First, I ventured to Vogue’s website and looked at the menswear for Spring 2021. Then going down the list from A to Z, most having reviews, I copy and pasted each into the words cloud text box.

Next, I edited the list of words taking out things like: the, and, or any other word that did not have any symbolism to fashion or the shows. This allowed words that would be indications of trends set to pop up this spring. Thus the word cloud was born, allowing me to see the what collections has in common, as you can see down below.

Word Cloud

Just like the previous project that involved a word cloud the biggest words were things I would expect, collection, show, and fashion. As you look closer words like film, home, and digital string together. We can guess that because of Covid-19 and people are not allowed to be at fashion shows, that the brands had to come up with different ways of getting their collections out. Whether it was Marine Serre creating a post apocalyptic world showcasing her atheistic in a way no fashion show could or Gucci doing an at home look book with celebrities, each brand found a way.

Some other trends that this word cloud can lead us to believe is the comfort trend. Since many of us are not going many paces these days, comfortability is key. Words like home, feel, sweater, and comfort show that is a trend that the fashion world is catching up to the general public with.

Something that caught my eye was the words womenswear, skirts, and patterns. These two things as you can guess are usually associated with womens clothing. With an emerging youth culture of degendering clothing fashion brands have caught on that fashion no longer needs labels.

Below there are a few more trends that popped up into the word cloud. I though it would be nice to put a look book together to visualize these words.

Craig Green
Burberry
Alexander McQueen
Lou Dalton
Gucci
JW Anderson
Raf Simmons

Of course there are so many more looks from these runways, but that is what I challenge you all to do. Go on to YouTube or Vogue and try to see how fashion has changed in the age of COVID, where there are usually fashion shows are now Balenciaga video games, VR experiences, and look books. I wouldn’t have been able to do this online project about fashion and the internet without COVID forcing everything online. It’s interesting how fashion can be consumed online versus in person and I hope to explore that more in time.
