UK and US Royals quote: Tech tools and Blockchain Can help to fight against slavery and Human Trafficking
United States anti-human trafficking Ambassador John Richmond along with UK Royale Princess Eugenie recently spoke in favor of using new technologies like phone apps and blockchain to address human traffickingat a conference in Vienna, Austria on April 8th2019 as reported by Reuters.Princess Eugenie is the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth and founder of the Anti-Slavery Collective. She founded this collective in 2017 and it is an independent collective whose mission is to bring change-makers together to raise awareness for modern slavery as a global epidemic.
The Vienna conference was hosted by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Suring the conference, Princess Eugeniereportedly noted that technology should be our forerunnerwhile combating with human trafficking. According to Reuters, she further added that, “I have learned about how blockchain is having a huge impact on supply chain management, and how an app in Britain can help the public report modern slavery at car washes.”
In Britain these car washes are one of the hotspot of forced labor. So, the Church of England and the Catholic Church in England and Wales launched the campaign “Safe Car Wash App” because of their growing concernsabout the fact that some of the estimated 18,000 hand car washes operating around Britain are exploiting workers (Source — Reuters.com).The app used blockchain for registering a worker at car washes to prevent forced labor and itallows users to enter their location as well as other various indicators of the presence of slave labor.
This app was developed in March 2018 and was launched in June 2018 through which immeasurable improvement can be done to the lives of the victims of modern slavery being cruelly exploited in car washes today. The country’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner Kevin Hyland said in a statement that in addition to the improvement of the victims lives, it also empowers a community to act. After using this app, there were nearly 1,000 cases of slave labor at car washes found in the U.K. (Source — Dailymail.co.uk) and this caught the attention of the Princess of U.K.
But according to anti-human trafficking Ambassador and activist John Richmond, this as a whole cannot stop modern-day slavery or human trafficking. However, he later noted that there are tech tools which can help the people to do their job better. He believes that Innovations like blockchain(an electronic and tamper-proof “distributed ledger”)technology could be used as tools to facilitate the job of fighting those despicable activities on the daily basis.
Blockchain technology has a number of sustainable and feasible practical applications in combatting and curbingsuch social vices whichare currently being explored. But it requires cooperation and collaboration from every participant in order to achieve the real success. Overall, it is very important that people should not exaggerate blockchain as an enduring cure for the problem of modern slavery and Human Trafficking. Instead, people should make the efforts by themselves to create a general understanding of this issue. Then only they can identify practical ways to address this problem ofmodern slavery and they will have considerable potential to enhance the fight against it.
