Running for horsepower
Digital Detox team doing half marathon for local charity Ebony Horse Club.
It’s not your usual St Paddy’s day celebration, but on Sunday 17th March, hundreds of runners will congregate in West London to take part in the Richmond Half Marathon. Amongst them, a team of runners from Digital Detox, who will be running to raise money for Ebony Horse Club.
Giving back to the community
We caught up with the runners at Digital Detox before one of their lunchtime training runs. Liam Snelling is the COO of Digital Detox, normally an avid cycler who’s temporarily switched his wheels for running shoes:
“We love Brixton, and we want to give something back to our local community. We’re lucky to be based here, but not everyone has the luck of a good start in life. Coldharbour Ward is the poorest in Lambeth and Ebony Horse Club is one of few places where young people in the area can go. When we learned about the club, we knew we wanted to get involved. Now we are looking at more ways of doing that, like volunteering opportunities and having the kids come to our office to see what we do.”
Transforming lives through horses
Showjumping horses in the middle of a south London housing estate is a somewhat incongruous, but joyful sight. It’s the HQ of Brixton-based community riding centre Ebony Horse Club. Their aim is to transform young lives through horses, allowing kids growing up in one of South London’s most disadvantaged communities to experience the bridled joy of riding and horse care (pun definitely intended).
