We’ve all been there — you landed a once in a lifetime interview for your dream job. Inevitably, panic ensues and your mind is flooded with questions and concerns.. What questions might they ask me? What if I make a bad first impression? How do I get a second interview?

The good news? You are not alone. It happens to all of us and although these are understandable concerns, we’re here with a team of professionals to help put your mind at ease. We’ve done the work for you and have rounded up the best advice so you can seamlessly and confidently navigate this process.

So, take a breath, here are some exclusive tips from your digital matchmakers at Digitalent to ace your interview and help you land that job!

1. Do your homework

We can’t stress it enough — come prepared to your interview! A quick ten minute Google search the day before an interview can really pay off for your career in the long run.

Take the time to look through the company’s website. Educate yourself on any cool new projects the company is working on, or what makes them different from their competitors. Bonus: Not only does it show that you’re passionate about the industry and the place you’re interviewing, but it also shows you’re serious about the job opportunity!

2. Quality > Quantity

The hiring manager will be assessing if you can do the job successfully and whether you’d be a good fit at the company. Focus on making sincere connections rather than solely inquiring about the quantifiable benefits. So use this to your advantage by asking pertinent questions to figure out if it’s a place where you’d really want to work.

Avoid talking about the hours you’ll be working, the benefits that come with the job, PTO, or salary. Why? Because the hiring managers may not have all that information and at the end of the day you should be trying to decide if this is an opportunity that would be a good fit for you. So, if taking a job comes down to the PTO or a couple extra thousand dollars, you may want to reconsider if that job is truly the right match for you!

3. Bring that 1st date charm

You should approach an interview like you would a first date — be enthusiastic not desperate, positive not negative, and confident not cocky.

You don’t want the hiring manager to feel anything but positive during your interview, so stay away from any phrases that are negatively worded. This includes complaining about previous employers and steering clear of questions like, “What do you not like about working here?” or “What are your biggest challenges right now?”

Stay optimistic throughout the initial interview and concentrate on building a genuine rapport with the hiring manager. Before you know it, the hiring manager will be swiping right on you.

Overall, just remember that the goal of the first interview is to leave the person on the other end of the table with the impression that you’re not only going to make their life easier, but you’re going to make it more pleasant in the sense that they will look forward to working with you. Focus on making authentic connections and that’s how you’ll get remembered amongst a pool full of qualified applicants.
