Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor
On Friday, March 24, Virginia Eubanks visited the Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, MA to discuss her book, Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor. Eubanks was joined in conversation by Ethan Zuckerman, Director of the Center for Civic Media at MIT.
“This is a set of problems we gave ourselves. This means we have the tools to solve them (Virginia Eubanks).”
The event space was overflowing with eager attendants. Most stood for the entire hour as all the seats were filled almost immediately. Harvard Kennedy School’s own David Eaves pointed out that, although Eubanks’s book sheds light on a grim topic, it was encouraging to see so many in attendance. With public events like these, more people are encouraged to think critically and take part in the debate on what roles technology can play in our future.
