Enter the OnePlus One — a game-changer that not only redefined the smartphone market but also reshaped our perception of ubiquitous computing. Beyond its time, this device defied norms, fusing cutting-edge technology with affordability, embodying the essence of user-centric software design in the form of Oxygen OS. After talking about HU.MA.NE AI Pins, a “Smartphone Killer” and all the futuristic technology that we witness today in our last essays, let’s go back in time and experience a revolution all over again, lets meet the true “Flagship Killer”. Following our journey of Research & Development towards seamlessly merging technology with our existence by using new innovative User Intrerfaces, we arrive ​​at The OnePlus One which stands as a pivotal artifact in the landscape of ubiquitous computing systems, a groundbreaking device that epitomized the convergence of visionary innovation and user-centric technology. To evaluate its significance, we will have to delve into the history of what was possibly the most successful and favorite user interface for hand-held computing devices ever witnessed.

Vision & Mission: The OnePlus One emerged in 2014 as a brainchild of Carl Pei and Pete Lau and a subsidiary of BBK Electronics (The parent company for Oppo and Vivo.), envisioning a disruptive force in the smartphone market. Their mission was clear: to create a device that harmonized top-tier specifications with an affordable price, challenging established industry norms. Emphasizing user-centric design, OnePlus focused on delivering an exceptional smartphone experience.

The technology behind the OnePlus One was developed to address prevalent issues in the smartphone market:

  1. Affordability Barrier: Premium smartphones were often inaccessible due to their exorbitant prices, limiting their reach to a select few.
  2. User Experience Gap: Many affordable devices compromised on user experience, lacking in software optimization and design.
  3. Lack of Competitive Options: The market lacked devices offering flagship-level specifications at a competitive price point.

Additionally, in the software space — dominated by iOS, known for its polished interface and seamless user experience, and Android counterparts like TouchWiz, plagued by bloatware and inconsistencies, the OnePlus One and its Oxygen OS emerged as a disruptor. While iOS held the reputation for its streamlined functionality, They lacked in flexibility and customizability, to give you perspective- ROMming or Rooting iPhones was literally called Jailbreak. On the other hand, Android variations often fell short, cluttered with unnecessary preloaded apps and sluggish performance. Amidst this dichotomy, the OnePlus One dared to challenge the status quo, presenting a refined Android experience that rivaled iOS in its simplicity and elegance, setting a new standard for user-centric design in the Android ecosystem.

DESIGN SPECIFICATION, PRACTICALITY AND SAFETY CONCERNS

The term “flagship killer” was coined around the OnePlus One for its ability to rival flagship devices in performance while offering an affordable price tag. This idea emerged through its impressive specifications, making it a very sought-after device for tech enthusiasts seeking top-tier features without breaking the bank. The smartphone’s design was a harmonious blend of elegance and functionality. Boasting a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, it delivered crisp visuals. Its sleek, sandstone-textured back provided a unique grip and a premium feel. Under the hood, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM, it offered seamless multitasking and smooth performance, comparable to high-end devices.

Oxygen OS: Redefining the Android Experience. The OnePlus One marked the introduction of Oxygen OS, a departure from the heavy-handed customizations seen in other Android skins. Built on Android Lollipop, Oxygen OS aimed to deliver a near-stock Android experience with added customization options. It focused on performance optimization, streamlined design, and user-friendly features, setting a new benchmark in operating system design. The onset of Oxygen OS set new global standards in ubiquitous computing systems research and development. Its commitment to a clean, stock-like interface inspired other manufacturers to streamline their software offerings, focusing on user-centric design and performance optimization. This shift influenced the industry’s trajectory towards more streamlined, user-friendly interfaces.

Oxygen OS prioritized user privacy and security, offering robust features while maintaining a user-friendly interface. Its commitment to timely updates and security patches reinforced user trust. The stock-like interface and intuitive design prioritized user control and ease of navigation, setting a benchmark for privacy-conscious yet user-centric smartphone experiences.

The OnePlus One and Oxygen OS disrupted the established order in the smartphone market. They challenged the notion that premium features came with an exorbitant price tag, proving that cutting-edge technology could be accessible to a wider audience without compromising on quality or user experience. The early OnePlus devices, coupled with Oxygen OS, pioneered a transformative era in ubiquitous computing, redefining the scope of technology and user interaction while leaving an indelible mark on various fronts.

They reason for Oneplus to be ahead of their time was their constant nature to be first movers- Oneplus transitioned into IOT way faster than tech giants like Apple and at the same pace as Google and Korean counterparts like Samsung and LG. OnePlus, with its early devices, was among the pioneers in integrating IoT features like NFC, laying the groundwork for seamless connectivity across devices. This foresight into IoT integration reflected OnePlus’ commitment to future-ready technology and its vision of creating an interconnected ecosystem that extended beyond smartphones.

The synergy between early OnePlus devices and Oxygen OS was more than just hardware and software; it was a catalyst for change in the tech industry. Their impact on ubiquitous computing, community-driven innovation, streamlined user interfaces, and future-ready integrations like IoT exemplified a paradigm shift. NEVER SETTLE. Though their was one more character that was essential to One Plus's success. As one of the co-founders, Carl Pei was instrumental in shaping OnePlus’ identity and company culture. His vision for disruptive innovation and commitment to creating exceptional user experiences set the tone for OnePlus’ credibility. Pei’s role in establishing the community-centric approach, including the innovative invite system and engaging directly with users, fostered a passionate OnePlus community. This approach not only created a sense of exclusivity but also empowered users, instilling a sense of ownership in the brand’s growth.

Pei’s influence extended to product development, emphasizing the importance of a clean, user-friendly experience. He advocated for a stock Android-like interface with minimal bloatware, aligning with the user-centric design philosophy. Oneplus was born on the same exact concept, Carl was a kid in his early 20s when he recognised the potential of Android and power of UI.

CyanogenMod & India’s pivotal role in Oneplus’s Journey.

As the International Marketing Manager at Oppo (2011) prior to starting Oneplus, Pei found Stephanie Jane Kodnik and her infamous CyanogenMod (now-Lineage OS). The collaboration between Carl Pei and Stephanie Jane Kodnik led to the birth of the Oppo N1, a device that ventured into new realms of software customization.

At the core of this collaboration was CyanogenMod, a popular aftermarket firmware known for its extensive customization options and optimizations beyond stock Android. CyanogenMod, based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), offered users enhanced control over their device’s software, featuring a clean, bloatware-free interface with additional customization options. Pei and Kodnik recognized its potential and partnered to integrate CyanogenMod into the Oppo N1, marking a departure from traditional manufacturer skins (the phone had already debuted in Oppo’s proprietary Color OS prior to the integration by Carl) and introducing users to a more customizable Android experience.

This, of course, didn’t stop here; their partnership laid the groundwork for OnePlus to debut with CyanogenMod as its operating system. The OnePlus One was set to revolutionize the smartphone industry, offering CyanogenMod’s advanced customizability and user-centric design.

However, just before the OnePlus 1 launch in India, Cyanogen Inc. struck a deal with another company, granting them exclusive software rights for the region. This unforeseen turn of events prompted OnePlus to pivot, leading to the development of Oxygen OS. Born from the need to craft a distinctive software experience, Oxygen OS drew inspiration from CyanogenMod’s philosophy of offering a clean, near-stock Android interface with essential customizations. Its refined, bloatware-free design resonated with users, solidifying it as one of the most successful OS in handheld computing history. Oneplus and its software definitely became a success in India and worldwide and garnered immense love and appreciation from especially the youth.

The journey of Cyanogen, followed by Oxygen OS and later Lineage OS, significantly contributed to establishing stock Android as the global standard for smartphone interfaces. Furthermore, this evolution eventually led to the creation of Google Pixel devices. However, coming back to Pei and his contributions, we can say without a doubt that his commitment to delivering an optimized software experience resonated with users, distinguishing OnePlus devices in an increasingly cluttered smartphone market. The departure of Carl Pei and Oxygen OS led Oneplus away from users. Nevertheless, this journey still carries on with the advent and rapid growth in popularity of “Nothing”, echoing the ethos he gave rise to under the brand name of OnePlus. The emphasis on simplicity, intuitive design, and user engagement remains central to Pei’s approach, a testament to his enduring influence in shaping consumer technology.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS AND SUCCESS METRICS

The OnePlus One made a significant impact not just as a smartphone but as a disruptor in the market, revolutionizing the traditional business model of flagship devices. Here’s a brief overview of its business and financial aspects:
