Global Goals Jam 2018 @HRDEF for Smart City Dehradun
The Global Goals Jam 2018 is a two-day hands-on design, development event where participants discussed, generated ideas, brainstorm and developed prototype on local problems faced by them towards contributing for United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Global Goals Jam 2018 was the 3rd edition of the #GlobalGoalsJam happened world-wide in 70 cities on 21–23 September with around 2500 creators and makers. This year, HaritaDhara Research Development and Education Foundation (HRDEF) hosted this event first time in the Dehradun with support and guidance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Digital Society School (DSS), the Amsterdam.
Dehradun, a city in the foothills of the Himalayas known for its beautiful environment, Quality Schools, Litchi Plantations and Basmati rice. City witnessed changes since the creation of state of Uttarakhand in the year 2000. Over the last 17 years Dehradun is capital of state which has resulted in mass migration from hills, rural areas, and high tourist footprints leading to an ever increasing pressure on the limited resource. This leads to increase in air pollution, waste problems, traffic, energy consumption, and parking problems. Besides this, lack of playground, parks, cycle lane, and green spaces are local challenges for its residents.
Connecting Today, Creating Tomorrow. Let’s #Design2030Now!
Therefore, participants choose to design interventions for the Sustainable Development Goals that matter most to them based on five SDGs goals: 1-No Poverty, 3-Good Health and Well-Being, 5-Gender Equality, 7-Affordable and Clean Energy, and 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities. They showed Care. Share. Dare approach while working on Local problems having in mind Global Goals that may join UNDP, DSS repository. HRDEF worked on three projects that are interconnected among five goals. Er. Anant Bhaskar Garg conducted the Jam and Dr. Manisha Agarwal supported as Mentor to the Jam besides involvement from other members.
City-o-Culture
This group addressed the issue of migration from hilly and rural areas of the state thus they worked out various possible solutions, what are reals causes and how to reduce this migration problem. They came up that Sustainable Tourism can be possible way to provide solution to this problem. “Sustainable Tourism has to meet social, cultural, ecological and economic requirements. Sustainable tourism holds a long-term view, for present and future generations, ethically and socially just and culturally adapted, ecologically viable and economically sensible and productive” (CII and Yes Bank Report, 2017).
City-o-Culture team focused on SDG Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG Goal 5, and Goal 1 to provide more livelihood opportunities to women and under-represented people of rural, hilly areas. They linked and identified, establish processes through using technology as a tool to prevent migration. A social media channel to promote local facilities, providing information on tourist hot-spots, services to tourists and local residents who cater to needs of tourists and maintain clean environment. Further, sell of local hand-made products can boost local economy.
Waste-o-Wealth
Many people do not know waste is a resource. Others throw their garbage onto the streets. How to see waste as a valuable resource and improve behaviours towards recycling, reduce, reuse, and rethink. This was the main objective of the second group focusing on SDG Goal 11, 5, 3.
They came up with ideas of converting 1. textile waste to new decorative products, 2. kitchen waste to composting, and 3. Newspapers to useful items. They thought to provide better opportunities to women by providing training for the waste items processing. Thus, contributing towards clean healthy environment in the city.
Energy-o-Natural
Smart city and clean air was the focus of third group related SDG 11, 7, 3. Through design sprints they identified creating and conversion to Green Buildings having rooftop solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and rooftop garden is necessity for smart clean green city. Further, they proposed to create green spaces powered by solar energy, having vertical gardens for increasing natural within built-in environment.
To create awareness on energy, smart city, green spaces there is need to hold sessions, campaign on social media, awareness on waste segregation, installation of rooftop solar, water harvesting, and vertical gardening to reduce air pollution.
We seek suggestions, and support for the ideas, and thankful to Global Goals Jam team, our supporters and well-wishers.
