We are a team of young designers who are thrilled to make positive changes in the world. Part of that was joining the Global Goals Jam 2018! Our team consists of four people: Cas de Mönnink, Levy Kösters, Tippayaporn Pavavimol (Anns) and Guus Prevoo.

This year we participated the jam held by the Cube Design Museum. We focused on Goal 11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. The challenge was the increasing amounts of empty buildings in Parkstad Limburg. This is a region in the south of The Netherlands, including Kerkrade where the museum is located. As the ones who live and work in this area, we would like to use our creativity to design and develop these different neighborhoods!

The design processes were done step-by-step by using different sprints. To organize the short project we used the first sprint to research and define the challenge and region we had to design for. At this moment we gathered a few options and figured out the target audiences which are students, fresh graduates, and start-up companies.

The final concept after the second and third sprint was the Bright Brain Society. This was the concept of getting start-ups and students working and living in a campus. Where you could get a house to work and live in, and besides that there would be 3 main buildings for workshops, research and testing facilities.

We continued with the fourth sprint by going out to observe the city and asking for people’s opinions about the project. As a result, we found out that most of empty spaces are in apartment buildings, which made us realize the current situation. So, we decided to adapt our concept by making it more feasible to execute.

At first, our concept was made with top-down thinking. So in order to make our concept more feasible we started using bottom-up thinking, beginning with the background information. We considered which facilities already are located in the area. Then, we explored ways to tackle the challenge by turning unused spaces into living areas and office spaces where the target group can create and develop their ideas.

Apart from that, we learned that creating a sense of community is important as well. In order to utilize the area efficiently and effectively, it is vital to connect people together. We think that there should be a balance between people who already live in the apartment and the new inhabitants. So that they can co-create and drive the society together.

“Movement” was thus created based on the aim to create a movement that strengthens neighborhoods in Parkstad. We came up with three core values that represent the movement, which are:

1) Involve

2) Respect

3) Contribute.

The concept is meant to encourage the target groups to come up with the ideas to improve the society together with local people. The project does not only suit with the Parkstad, but it could also be adapted and applied to other areas in the Netherlands.
