This article is to give an overview to those who are looking to prepare for the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Foundation Certificate. I have gathered points from different resources to help to get a quick understanding of what, how, and where of the exam.

Oracle has recently announced a free subscription and training subscription for its OCI and Application Development, plus a free certification through Dec’21. This is the best time for a professional, whether experienced in Cloud technologies or a novice to get hands-on training with certification to top it off and all without spending a dime.

The first step towards Oracle-certified professionals is to achieve a foundation certificate.

Below, I will compile some quick key points in one place that newbies usually have to spend some time getting.

Register to Oracle University

Firstly, register here for the Oracle Education portal to get free access to a huge library of training video resources. They have divided the video both by learning paths or individual courses. If you already have a foundation of cloud concepts you can choose different courses to gain understand of each concept.

Next create an Oracle Cloud Free Tier Account, that will give you access to build, test and deploy applications on the cloud tier for free. However, this is a 30-day free trial to US$300 in free credits, whatever comes first.

Oracle certifications are recognized all over the globe and certified professionals are always in demand. With this, you can expand your knowledge and validate your skills to a potential employer, which comes with a higher salary prospect.

Topics Covered in Exam

Now let's get to the main point, what topics are covered in the exam. Since this is a foundation certification, the candidate is not expected to have expert knowledge in all domains, but yes a good understanding is required.

  • Understanding of basic cloud concepts — Scalability, Elasticity, Fault Tolerance, and Disaster Recovery.
  • Difference between PaaS, SaaS, and IaaS.
  • What are RPO and RTO.
  • The key features of OCI — Regions, Single/Multi Tenant Availability Domains, Fault Domains, API’s and SDK’s.
  • Core OCI Services — IAM, Compute, Compartments, Database, Network, and Storage.
  • OCI Security and Compliance — Virtual Cloud Network, Security Lists, Network Security Groups, Web Application Firewall, Identity, Multi-Factor Authentication, Managed Keys, Data Safe, Audit and compliance.
  • OCI pricing — OCI subscription models, pricing calculator, Free tier, and SLA’s.

How to Prepare for Exam

The best resource will be to go through the entire certification video content made available by Oracle learning. It gives the user a basic but complete understanding of the core concepts of Cloud and OCI services that will help you prepare for the exam.

It even has a quiz section where your knowledge is tested for each completed section.

You should also do a reading of the white papers, product documentation, and blogs.

The better prepare you are, the better your chances for success.

How to Register for Exam

Once you have watched at least 30 minutes of video content, the registration link for the exam will be activated. You can click on the link and register for the exam.

If you have not registered yourself via the oracle learning portal, you can also register for the exam via http://www.pearsonvue.com/oracle.

Exam Format and Passing Score

The exam will be based on a Multiple Choice format with a 90-minute duration. The number of questions will be 55 and you will need to achieve a minimum of 68% marks to pass the exam.
