One of the common problems faced by cancer patients due to chemotherapy is hair loss also referred to as alopecia. Especially for women, hair loss can be the single most traumatic side effect of cancer treatment.
Given below are five ways to manage hair loss during cancer treatment.

  1. INCREASE INTAKE OF VITAMINS

Intake of vitamins such as Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Biotin will help to improve the blood flow to the hair scalp and boost the hair growth of cancer patients. Vitamin B12 increases the count of red blood cells, Vitamin C helps the hair absorb iron which strengthens the hair and Vitamin E helps the growth of new blood vessels that stimulates hair growth.

2. INCREASE CARBOHYDRATES INTAKE

The consumption of more carbohydrates is essential to recover hair loss after chemotherapy. Complex carbohydrates that are available in whole bread, potatoes etc. provide slow release of energy to the body which helps the hair strengthen from the inside out.
The carbohydrate levels in the body can be increased by eating navy and lima beans, wheat germs and citrus fruits. Along with the carbohydrate intake, drink plenty of water.

3. NATURAL REMEDIES TO MOISTURIZE HAIR

After chemotherapy, your hair needs moisture and nourishment. The best natural remedy for this is to mix honey with warm water and apply it after shampooing the hair. You can also prefer alternatives like mixing egg yolk with water or mashed avocado with coconut oil for 10–15 minutes on the hair.

4. FREQUENT HAIR MASSAGE TO REJUVENATE HAIR

Periodic hair massage is good for blood circulation and hair growth. Mash up ripe papaya, mix it with plain yogurt to strengthen hair and reduce split ends. To nourish the hair, use natural conditioners like olive oil, sandalwood, rosemary and aloe vera gel. Alfalfa juice helps to nourish the hair roots and prevent hair thinning.

5. STAY AWAY FROM DRY INGREDIENTS

Dry ingredients such as mineral oils and fragrance can damage weak hair. Use only a wide-toothed comb when coming through wet hair. Also avoid using hair dryers, straighteners and hot rollers.
