Last week we were surprised with the Civilization 6 announcement trailer. Due for release 21st October 2016 and already we have been treated to some Civilization VI gameplay videos.

The gameplay preview only went through to turn 60 and was on a limited scenario and obviously we are still 5 months away from release… but this gives a great insight on what to expect. Read on as I break down the big changes and most exciting features so far.

Civ VI

New Game Engine

Civilization 6 is a completely new game engine… but almost every core mechanic from 5 is present in 6 including religion and tourism.

Workers have been replaced by Builders who will be a consumable, so you will have to keep building workers to improve tiles (much like the way priests worked in Civ5).

The new Civic Tree is believed to be like the tech tree but upgrades are purchased with culture rather than research. Although not many details of this have been released yet.

Barbarians now have scouts which can trigger invasions which forces your military to be a lot more pro-active early game. They will also hunt down your scouts whilst not straying too far from their base, there AI has improved vastly. This will surely make the early game a lot more challenging.

Graphics

First reception of the released screenshots had a lot of people worried about the style of the graphics of the game. However, from this footage of the game it looks incredibly clean and smooth. The fog of war being an empty map is a great idea and executed incredibly well.

As you can see above, the top right hand corner of the screen hasn’t been explored yet, so this is a blank canvas. As you can see on the left of the screen that territory has been explored but not in a while so there is only an outline of what was discovered.
