Most people are quite comfortable sticking to their social circle. They likely have at least one or two good friends that have been around since childhood or have perhaps formed life-long friendships with classmates from varsity.

But time changes things. Perhaps you’ve moved to a new city, grown apart from your network or lost people close to you…even travelling regularly can get quite lonely.

For many people across the globe, there is a constant struggle to make meaningful connections. It’s quite daunting and potentially awkward to show up somewhere with hopes of meeting new people who might not have the same goal.

Instead of trying to strike up a conversation with a stranger at the grocery store, lingering at your neighbour’s door for some sugar that you don’t really need, or creeping someone out with a random message on social media, let’s look at some fun ways you can meet new people in real life:

  1. Meetup

The opportunities are endless with Meetup–there are so many different interest brackets to choose from and groups to join. Events are created by a host, who acts as the link. You can view fellow members profiles and filter the settings according to your preferences. The great thing about Meetup is that there aren’t usually any admin fees involved.

2. InterNations

This platform was designed more specifically for Expats looking to connect with other people of the same nationality or to meet locals. Regardless, it’s a great way to expand your cultural horizons, especially if you’re in unfamiliar territory or planning on travelling/immigrating. Much like Meetup, there are “organisers” who create events or send out invitations according to your local community.

3. DINE4SIX

You could try joining a communal table at a restaurant or you could join a DINE4SIX table. An emerging social dining platform, DINE4SIX creates events at some of the best restaurants in select cities across the globe. The App allows you to explore the food scene in your relevant city, book a seat at a table of six and meet new people who are looking to socialise while enjoying a bespoke menu at a trendy restaurant. Download the App and sign up to receive a weekly newsletter with details about upcoming events.

4. Airbnb Experiences

If you thought Airbnb was just for finding last-minute accommodation, think again! From workshops and classes to concerts, tours, hikes and kayaking with penguins; there is an awesome variety of activities to choose from on Airbnb experiences at a vast range of prices.

5. Secret Sunrise

Secret Sunrise is not geared specifically for meeting people; however, it aims to unite the world through dance and conscious collaboration. This global movement aims to get the world grooving and moving, through dance or yoga sessions. Express yourself in the presence of others.

These are but a few ways you can actually meet new people without the pressure to chat online or choose associates according to their physical appearance. Just choose activities according to your interests. The best part is the events are already set up and happening, with or without you–again, no pressure.

As these platforms cannot 100% ensure the credibility or reputation of the attendees, it is necessary to be cautious and mindful of potential danger. However, I’ve heard some fantastic experiences about these channels, so do not fear:

You will find your people. Just be open-minded, a tad bit brave, and most importantly, be yourself.
