“There has never been a sadness that can’t be cured by breakfast food.”- Ron Swanson

There is a special place in my heart for breakfast food.

I remember like it was yesterday, my parents heading out for breakfast and my brother and I either rushing out of bed to make it in time, or making them late and missing breakfast time completely. I developed a bias toward restaurants that served all day breakfast, on principle, because they just got me.

Thankfully, this appears to have been a more common issue than I’d anticipated, as “All Day Breakfast”s seem to be all the more prevalent now.

And you can bet that I take full advantage of this.

In no particular order, here are a couple of recommended brunch spots. Not necessarily because they’re highly-rated (though they might be), but because each of them has something unique to offer. Oh, and they all accept SnapScan because I’m all about that kind of convenience.

The Blue Cafe: Follow them on Instagram

The Blue Cafe

Tamboerskloof

A “Neighbourhood Heirloom since 1904,” this quaint cafe is both adorable and family-friendly. A dear friend introduced me to this hidden gem, and I allow myself to feel like a kid again when ordering the Minion Monty — boiled eggs with sourdough soldiers, cheese and tomato. Predictably, I’ll order a flat white and expect to be delighted by a smart quote on a saucer accompanying the Le Creuset mug.

Freshly baked German goods at Dinkel.

Dinkel Bakery

Tamboerskloof

Located on the mountain slope before Kloofnek, Dinkel is a Artisanal German Bakery that offers traditional German speciality bread, freshly baked rolls and pastries as well as delicious German cakes.

I’ll often grab a coffee & croissant on my way to work. They offer an interesting breakfast & light lunch menu, with a German twist. For example, eggs served with a slice of fresh watermelon.

The interior is cosy and homely, with a bookstore to explore upstairs.

Harvest Cafe

Harvest Cafe

Bo-Kaap

Known for its bright, colourful conformity, Bo-Kaap has it’s own unique historical and aesthetic charm. Harvest is located on the second floor of an artisanal store on a corner, with one of best views of the city.

They offer delightful and nutritious options of the best quality. Perfect for those who are more on health-conscious side, but decadent enough for those on the not-so-health-conscious side.

You have to try a smoothie!

A great treat for foreign friends visiting the City.

Giulios

Cape Town

“I envision Giulio’s to be more than just a corner café — it’s a place of comfort. Whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee on your way to the office or looking for a cosy spot to get some work done, our door is always open.’- Giulio, the owner, who is always present and charming.

The decor is elegant, and the lighting is divine (defs Insta-worthy)

The french toast changed my life and I occasionally crave their Shakshuka.

10/10 would recommend.

Clarkes

Cape Town

Aside from being famous for their burgers, this is where the trendy cool kids nurse their hangovers with bloody-mary jugs, while the hipsters enjoy grapefruit brulee and avo toast.

Set on iconic Bree street in the heart of Cape Town, the relaxed vibe is the perfect way to ease into the day.

Tashas

Seapoint

Oh, Tasha’s… every “valley girl” equivalent’s go-to. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad experience at any Tasha’s branch. Their standards are consistently high across the board.

And of course, each branch has a signature menu along with the standard one. As far as cute cafe’s at the waterfront go, tashas wins by a mile.

Enjoy a Moroccan style eggs breakfast or a decadent smoothie bowl before heading out for a day of shopping.

Forest Feels at Chardonnay Deli

Chardonnay Deli

Constantia

When I arrived in Cape Town, I stayed in the Southern Suburbs, and this quickly became my favourite spot to read, do some work or grab something on my way to work.

Chardonnay Deli offers delicious farm style breakfasts, local farm produce, innovative smoothies and of course, freshly baked pastries. Get some fresh air out in the courtyard or find a seat next to the fireplace inside on a cold, rainy day.

Grab a fresh loaf of Sourdough for later.

Four & Twenty

Wynberg

“Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye, four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie…”

Whimsical and sweet-smelling, this is a safe space to quietly daydream or catch up with an old friend, all the while perusing a refreshing menu offering options like freshly-squeezed juices, a turmeric latte or a creamy cappuccino. You might queue on a Saturday morning, but the Asian-inspired eggs Benedict is well-worth it.

Stay a little while longer and share a freshly baked slice of cake.

There are so many wonderful little spots to be explored that I haven’t mentioned here. Either I haven’t been there yet, they don’t accept SnapScan or I might consider it ideal for something else.

Check out Mink & Trout’s Bottomless Bubbly Brunch on a Saturday morning, or Mulberry & Prince’s Sunday brunch. Jarryd’s, Folk cafe, Raw & Roxy, Round house, Jason’s Bakery, Fraiche Ayers, Loading Bay, Sidewalk cafe, Lily’s, Starlings, Kleinsky’s and Bootleggers are all worth checking out.

Take your significant other, your best friend, the girls, your parents or even a good book. You don’t need a special occasion for brunch- what else are weekends for?
