“You only have power over people so long as you don’t take everything away from them. But when you’ve robbed a man of everything, he’s no longer in your power — he’s free again.” — Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Our journey to the top is not ‘a climb’. It’s a free-fall; and then it’s a campaign through the bowels of hell. This is not meant to contradict the tested and true advice from proponents of personal development, because these are speaking in practical terms. True, success is not generally an overnight affair. It’s gradual.

The above is rather meant in a qualitative sense. Rock bottom is where we find absolute freedom, just as Solzhenitsyn suggests. Throughout this work, I will demonstrate why that is so.

First, though, there is something about that word, “freedom”, we need to get clear on. It is not always about being your own boss, possessing land, choosing your leaders, autonomy, or a long-winded declaration of rights and carte blanche. Such may be symptoms of the article in question; but not the actual thing.

How so? Well, the answer is surprisingly simple.
