This work on paper was executed while Lee Krasner was taking studio courses with Hans Hofmann along with her friend and fellow artist Mercedes Matter, who was mentored by Hofmann. Krasner’s drawing shows a recognizable representational nude figure with some spatial indication. The use of light captured Through erasure foreshadows her use of determined mark making. Krasner’s mastery of formal composition and intellectual curiosity drove her to produce some of the strongest Abstract Expressionist paintings that are in the same playing field than her better known male counterparts from the 20th century.
