7 days, so what?

In the scheme of things 7 days is not a lot. It’s one week. 168 hours. 10,080 minutes.

Yet writing a story each day fort 7 days is a pretty big milestone for somebody who has never done anything like this before. After only 4 days I was already struggling. It was hard.

So to have made it this far calls for some celebration. I think that it‘s’ good to celebrate the small wins.

Not to go crazy and crack open the Champagne. But to acknowledge that I have achieved something that I didn’t even plan to achieve. I had no plans to write daily stories on Medium but once I hit 3 days in a row I wanted to hit 7.

Achieving 7 days has now given me a boost to continue even longer. I have no idea how much longer. It could be a few days, a few weeks or even a month. We’ll have to wait and see.

Celebrating the small wins is closely tied to the concept of starting small or breaking big scary goals into smaller, friendlier milestones.

I don’t want to write about that today though. They can wait for a later story. Today is about celebrating.

To be honest it’s not much of a celebration. I’m just going to give myself a pat on the back and maybe allow myself to eat a little more white chocolate than I normally would.

Even though it is such a trivial sounding achievement, I’m pretty proud about it. I have started so many things before only to give up within a few days. Reaching the magic number 7 is something of a personal best!

Weirdly I feel that it’s also becoming easier to write. Not that I can magically write thousands of words all of a sudden. Just that it’s slightly less laborious than it was a week ago.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for this to truly become a habit.

What is your experience?

Now, where is my Milkybar...?
