Barnsley had the best online kit launch for 17/18 season

There have been some interesting launches this summer, and a lot of attention has been focused on the channel & method of launching the kit and/or new players. Particularly, a lot has been mentioned around the social media posts via whatsapp, snapchat, facebook etc…

We decided to take a very crude data approach, ‘simple’ one might say. We wanted to see which clubs got the most website traffic to their online merchandise stores COMPARED to their previous 6 months. This is to reveal if there was a ‘spike’ in activity for their new kit launch.

Example:

Club X, has an average website traffic of 10,000 visitors every month during the season.

When they launch the kit in June they received 20,000 visitors during the month.

Therefore they got 2 X the traffic they normally get.

Before sharing the table of the TOP 10 clubs for their online kit launch, we wanted to share a couple of launches we liked.

Southampton Kit Launch

The one I really liked was the super hero cartoony Youtube video launch by Southampton, just because it felt different. If you haven’t watched it yet, I’ve added below their first video (Note: There is also Episode Two)

Barnsley Kit Launch

We liked Barnsley’s kit launch because they combined the launch with a competition. To enter the competition you had to take a photo with the new kit and post in social media with the #AlwaysaRed . With all prizes coming out Barnsley’s inventory. Nice one!

Top 10 Clubs online 17/18 Kit Launches

As mentioned earlier in the article, this is a crude approach to analysing kit launches online. Some newly promoted teams such as Brighton & Millwall feature in the Top 10. There are some other teams such as Rotherham which seem more challenging to explain.

It is a fact however, that all teams listed in the TOP 10 got significantly more traffic to their merchandise websites in June when compared to their previous 6 months.
