In 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a scientific report, i.e. the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR1.5), to explore the consequences of a global temperature increase of 1.5°C and various pathways to diminish global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The gist of SR1.5 is unmistakably clear: global warming is an imminent threat to our planet and climate action is a connected effort. However, SR1.5 addresses mainly national and international policymakers.

A group of leading experts on climate diplomacy has therefore issued Summary for Urban Policymakers, which synthesizes the core tenets of SR1.5, IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report and other relevant research.

In this concerted effort, the authors of Summary for Urban Policymakers aim to facilitate urban policymakers and stakeholders with solid scientific arguments on why transitioning to a 1.5°C world is a sine qua non to preserve our planet. More importantly, they point out how these arguments translate into sustainable urban policies.

What Does SR1.5 Actually Entail?

Meticulous scientific scrutiny, extensive public consultation and several rounds of review preceded the publication…
