For many reasons, I would like to treat Trump separately from the Republican party, leave in peace my urge not to even count him as one of our kind, i.e., human species. However, for the matter of convenience, Trump and his party would remain interchangeable for the rest of this write-up.
The essence of democracy has been turned into a partisan fish market. Adherence to the principles of fair democracy is increasingly becoming a dream, so much so that it’s being breached every day by the president of America himself. Sadly, it is no longer a prerequisite people like to consider while choosing the president of their country. At least, not those who choose to elect or support Donald Trump. Is it difficult to see how he uses his supporters at his convenience and put them under the bus when the real situation arises? A situation when they need their government the most. As opposed to being supported and consigned on promises in those times, people are mentally being manipulated.
Even the most essential five freedoms of the first amendment; freedom of religion, speech, press, petition, and assembly, have become a daunting task. It happens when vested interest, ignorance, and money drive policy-making instead of justice, equality, and transparency. These are damages that cannot be apprehended in numbers.
Something more significant is amiss. Perhaps the spirit of democracy, which is over and above the institutional architecture of a country. What will it take to rebuild a society led by reason and compassion? What will it take for governments to become accountable to everyone again and not only to the elites? What will it take to break the status quo? A democratic reform probably. How does one bring about that?
America is not witnessing this kind of unrest for the first time. People of color and other minorities have fought for equality of rights and income even during the 19th century. They have been let down by both sides—Republicans as well as Democrats. Having substandard agendas in politics, regardless of the political party, is common. So common and frequent as politicians failing to represent the will of its people. Generally, the two are correlated.
A president who is non apologetically playing with the lives of so many Americans does not deserve to be reelected. His general insensitivity towards sufferers makes him so unlikeable as a human, leave alone as a president. How can anyone in their right senses have anything but a feeling of total aversion against him? Really. I mean, he is not even pretending to be fair, like other politicians. He is utterly unashamed of his doings.
On the contrary, he mocks the virus saying, why is it the only thing being bruited about. What else do you expect, Mr. President? Of course, the press and people will talk about things they are dealing with. It has, after all, shaken their lives in all respects. If you don’t want people to talk about it, you could have taken the right measures at the right time. Viruses don’t go away by attitudinizing about them. They go away by listening to science.
What is unusual this time is that America has been pushed to an intolerable extreme. Realization of which is not just limited to Americans, they have also become a subject of mockery and laughter worldwide. Nonetheless, my hopes are resting on the fact that America is beyond Trump. Americans will repair the deficits that have been created over the past few years.
Thinking afresh and engagement are the two things required urgently not to let the opportunity of change slip by. There is still hope that’s desperately needed to set America free from the shackles of a fascist. The possibility to revitalize American democracy lies in the hands of its people. America is truly a great nation and has a massive history of democratic legacy behind it to live by. Please, don’t let that elapse.
We are facing unusual times by all accounts. We can change the scheme of things by merely becoming purposeful electorates in the coming elections. Anything besides that is going to be a mistake with consequence. I am not saying the next changed government is the panacea of all problems you are currently facing. Certainly not. However, I uphold it dearly that Trump will only add to your woes. I mean, it’s a no brainer. Still, so many people fail to see some things as evident and apparent as risks involved in voting for someone who doesn’t care about matters as essential and serious as healthcare. Donald Trump dropped whatever minuscule facade there was left during the pandemic and revealed all his sides to you all for a reason. He is alluding to the future of America by doing that. If you choose to vote for him, the onus will be on you; each of you, for taking America backward.
