Men and women, Black and White, gathered in the street outside the Minneapolis courtroom and hugged each other as the verdict was read. National news coverage conveyed a profound sense of relief as well as excitement and celebration in the crowd as white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all charges in the killing of George Floyd.

When asked how she felt, one young woman told an MSNBC reporter, “I can breathe! I have a little bit of relief today.” A white man in the crowd acknowledged his privilege and said he was there to support the Black Lives Matter movement.

But for those who say that the system works, that justice has been done, tell that to the family of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old, unarmed man who was shot dead after being pulled over by a police officer near Minneapolis during the trial. Tell that to the family of Breonna Taylor, shot and killed while sleeping at home during a botched police drug investigation. To settle a lawsuit, the city of Louisville paid her family $12 million, but no officers have been charged in her death.

Tell that to the families of the hundreds of Black men and women unjustly killed…
