Democrat-Majority House Committee Issues Controversial Records Preservation Request

The Democrat-majority House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol (“the House Select Committee”) yesterday issued a highly controversial request to telecommunications companies. Their request? “Preserve the phone records of a group of GOP members of Congress and former President Donald Trump, as well as members of the Trump family, who played some role in the ‘Stop the Steal’ rally” preceding the riot, according to CNN. The records preservation request helps shine some light on which path the committee intends to follow.

As CNN notes, “the committee does have subpoena power, but requesting the information — especially from members of Congress — could lead to a lengthy legal battle.” This legal battle appears likely as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy released a statement in response: “If these companies comply with the Democrat order to turn over private information, they are in violation of federal law and subject to losing their ability to operate in the United States.” McCarthy continues, “If companies still choose to violate federal law, a Republican majority will not forget and will stand with Americans to hold them fully accountable under the law.” This tug of war over the House Select Committee’s scope and authority is only likely to continue as…
