On August 14th, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the social security act in to law, guaranteeing income for retirees and creating one of the most beloved social programs that the American people have ever had. Amidst his other New Deal programs, social security would be among the many others that lifted the country out of the Great Depression and strengthened the nation during one of its darkest times. At a time when many were experiencing incredible financial hardship, social security served as a reminder of what is possible when a government is actually functioning as an entity designed to help its people.

It should come as no surprise that after decades of Wall Street and big banks salivating at the chance to get their hands on social security, the program is under greater threat than arguably any other time since it came to be.

As we grow ever closer to the upcoming 2020 election, the fate of social security can be added to the long list of reasons why this will be the most consequential election arguably in modern history, shaping the fate of the country and arguably the world for decades to come.
