In my intellectual journey, as I sought to create and organize a logically sustainable mindset, I immersed myself in various lines of thought through readings and classes. At times, I came dangerously close to being ensnared by extremism. However, my insatiable curiosity always propelled me to seek more knowledge, preventing me from ever fully fitting into any ideological box.

I often feel like an ant navigating the vast ocean of human ideas on a tiny paper boat. Each day, I find myself drawn closer to an unexpected destination — advocating for a deeper understanding of people based on their relationships and values.

To truly understand a group, one must grasp the stories that bind them together and those that drive them apart. Living in society is much like playing a game of football. We see the players, the field, the goals, and the ball. But the true essence — the rules that govern our behaviour during those 90 minutes — is a shared fiction created to unite and entertain us.

The heart of the matter is that some of these shared fictions, like games, can bring even adversaries together with a common purpose. Others, however, only serve to divide and foster mistrust. We can see this dynamic play out in the complex historical narratives across various fields.

One of the most striking examples of unifying shared fiction is the advent of modern democracies. Democracies are built on the idea that, despite our differences, we can come together to achieve common goals. This framework allows people who might otherwise never collaborate to find common ground and work together for the greater good. Modern democracies provide a structure where diverse individuals and groups can unite under a shared set of principles and objectives. This arrangement encourages cooperation and dialogue, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

Democracy will always be superior to any arrangement where the main fiction behind the structure seeks to divide. This is why modern democracies are so unique and provide a better life for those living in such countries than any socialist dictatorship, fascist regime, or theocracy. Defending democracy in the face of new extremism has never been more important. The values and principles of democracy — freedom, equality, and justice — create a foundation for a society where individuals can thrive and collaborate, even amid differences. In a world where divisive ideologies are gaining traction, standing up for democratic ideals is crucial to ensuring a better future for all.

In essence, my journey has taught me that understanding and empathy are the keys to navigating the complex ocean of human ideas. By focusing on the stories and values that connect us, we can build bridges and foster a more inclusive and cooperative world. Embracing and defending democracy is paramount in this endeavour, as it is the most effective framework for uniting diverse people and promoting a harmonious society.
