The names of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis are permanently connected with the world of fantasy. However, their writings reflect many real world stories that a reader might bypass if they’re not careful. Wizards, hobbits, and talking lions may catch your attention, but there is reality hidden in their work that may be better than the fiction.

These learned men may have had an interest in creating stories of fantasy, but they laced these works with knowledge gained from the real world. It becomes obvious when you look at their backgrounds, settings of their stories, and habits of the characters within them.

Unfortunately, their creations may be linked to the world of children’s stories. However, the lessons they teach are made for adults as well children. Hopefully after a careful look at these two creators, you’ll see the reality in their fantasy. Their writings are much more than just children’s stories. They’re made of life lessons we can all learn from.

“Junior officers were being killed off, a dozen a minute. Parting from my wife then … it was like a death.”
