Satellite imagery revealed that between 14,500 and 25,000 penguin eggs or chicks drowned when the Antarctic sea ice that their colony was located on was destroyed by severe weather and thinning ice

Several adult emperor penguins, Aptenodytes forsteri, with chicks in a colony in Antarctica. Emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest penguin species, and they need strong sea ice to support their colonies from April to December.
