Why The Sanders Movement Matters

Some may not like Bernie’s approach but he’s right.

Bernie Sanders is consistently held to a different standard than the rest of the Democratic Presidential hopefuls. Nobody else is asked how to pay for every penny of their policy ideas or to explain in detail how they would work or be implemented. Sanders’s policies are fairly straightforward and do not need much explanation. He relies on the concept of universal programs because they are easier for the general public to understand and they also happen to be more successful than other means-tested programs.

In the first Democratic primary debate, Bernie Sanders was asked how he would implement his Medicare for All plan and get it passed. A lot of the media members and others on social media didn’t seem to like his answer. The thought was that he dodged the question and it wasn’t sufficient. Here is the exchange:

LESTER HOLT:

How do you implement it (Medicare for All) on a national level given the fact that it’s not succeeded in other states that have tried?

BERNIE SANDERS:

I will tell you how we’ll do it. We’ll do it the way real change has always taken place, whether it was the labor movement, the civil rights movement or the women’s movement. We will have Medicare for all
