Plant-based travelers will be delighted on this at-home foodie adventure to Southeast Asia. These restaurants offer authentic cuisine from Indonesia, Cambodia, and Thailand with plenty of vegetarian and vegan menu items.

Indonesia

Indonesian food isn’t always easy to come by in the Bay Area, but this pop-up restaurant has it covered. D’grobak serves Indonesian street food bakso, a meatball noodle soup the chefs call the “ramen of Indonesia.” Their Bakso Bakar, or grilled meatballs, praised by Yelp Bay Area as their “latest obsession” is available with Impossible meat, tofu, and vegan bbq steak. You can read more about this buzzworthy restaurant’s backstory here and order a bowl for yourself here.

Cambodia

Chef Channy Laux brings an authentic Cambodian dining experience to the Bay Area with Angkor Kitchen. Chef Channy was born in Cambodia and came to the USA as a teenage refugee in 1979. Not knowing a word of English, she worked tirelessly to achieve the American dream. Channy spent 30 years working as an engineer in the aerospace and biotech industries but there was always a sense of longing for the food she grew up with. To honor her mother and her Cambodian heritage, she started Angkor Kitchen using all natural ingredients, no artificial color and no artificial preservatives.

Her menu features vegan options like tofu spring rolls and lemongrass stir-fry. Check out the full menu here.

Thailand

Nothing says comfort food like a big bowl of fresh and delicious ingredients. Rolling Thai is our resident Thai Hot Pot place. If you’ve never tried hot pot, you’re in for a treat. Basically you cook each bite in hot broth as you are ready to eat it. Rolling Thai provides a medley of veggies, tofu, and other proteins that you can cook at your leisure in their spiced broth. Great idea for date night or something fun with the whole family.

Pia’s Thai Kitchen serves dishes featuring culinary influences from Pia’s homeland, the North Eastern Isaan region of Thailand. Isaan cuisine is more plant-based, incorporating a wide variety of wild herbs, and unlike classical Thai food from the Central regions. It does not use coconut milk, and has few fried dishes. We think it is the healthiest variety of Thai food. You can choose from curries, pad thai, soups, or order from the separate, entirely vegan menu.
