On Mondays of Kartika, one half of Lord Balabhadra is dressed in white cloth, while the other half is dressed in black cloth. The White half represents the fair-skinned Shiva while the Dark half symbolises the dark-skinned Vishnu. Thus, this form is their union, the composite deity Harihara.

The same ideology is at the root of the Harishankar Temple of Odisha.
