Greenvines Corp., Ltd.-Promoting real living with innovation(綠藤生物科技股份有限公司)
“We believe there is always a better choice in life. Only thinking out of the box can bring change.” From innovative living sprouts, organic-certified clean-grown mesclun to systemically altered all-natural personal-care products, the Taiwanese independent brand Greenvines tries to make living more sincere, healthy and sustainable. Even beyond recognition by consumers and media, Greenvines was the 3rd certified to be the B Corp. in Taiwan in 2015. Seeking corporate growth, conserving the environment, caring for employees, and engaging with communities, Greenvines strives to become a ‘Best for the World’ enterprise.
Operating a farm in Taoyuan county and an R&D ‘sprouting lab’ in the NTU Innovation Incubation Center, Greenvines holds environmental protection, health, and sustainability as business core values to fulfill a body’s true needs with innovative healthy sprouts and natural personal-care products. With the belief that “innovation can be sprouted”, CEO Cheng Han-ruei chose living sprouts to promote re-invention and practicality in regaining the trust of consumers for safe, real food.
Although Greenvines had mastered the technology of growing sprouts, the company hit a bottleneck with packaging design. Greenvines originally employed a commonly available blister pack for spout protection. However, the one-size-fits-all blister pack posts two problems: it was both difficult to open and oversized, causing spouts to be damaged during transportation. Through an eco-design consultation with ‘Project Rising Star in Green Innovation for SMEs’, the new package is now custom- made for the spouts and stands out from other blister packs easily for consumer recognition.
The final design of the new blister pack was determined after carbon-footprint assessments and product life-cycle analysis to allow adequate room for the spouts to grow and increase recyclability. The eco design of the new blister pack greatly improves Greenvines’ sustainable competition, receiving the first Carbon Footprint Label in the sprouting industry.
Individually, B Corps meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability, and aspire to use the power of markets to solve social and environmental problems. After years of effort, Greenvines was finally accredited with B Lab certification, and became the 3rd certified to be the B Corp in Taiwan. The certification examines a company’s performance in multiple aspects and acts as an endorsement, announcing Greenvines as an internationally “good” company, and further enables Greenvines to work collaboratively with other B corporations worldwide and continue to improve.
Adamantly pursuing an environmentally sustainable direction permits beneficial interactions among the enterprise, the environment, and the society. Cheng confided, “We want to be a benefit corporation, and this is an opportunity to have Greenvines listed side-by-side with international brand names.”
