Cover Gallery: The Detective Comics Work of Francis Manapul
Since taking over the title, Manapul’s art has transformed it into an entirely different animal
It’s been almost a year now since Francis Manapul & Brian Buccellato took over Detective Comics, transforming the book from the inside (and much more importantly in this case) out. The eye-catching cover design of writer/artist Francis Manapul was one of the first things that initially brought me to the title and continues to do so to this day.
Conveniently, Detective Comics also happens to be a pretty great read as well. The stories feel somewhat less tethered to the main continuity, unlike the recent Batman: Eternal, by a variety of creators, or monthly Batman series by Snyder and Capullo. If you’re unfamiliar with Detective, which doesn’t seem possible, or haven’t been reading recently, take a look at a gallery of Manapul’s cover work on Detective Comics over the past year.
If you’re curious of Manapul’s process for his covers, he’s been so kind as to post some imagery of the work in progress over on his blog. If you’ve new to comics and enjoyed the covers, be sure to check out the latest volume of The Flash, which began with the New 52 and was made by the same creative team of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato.
