2 weeks down. 1 week to go.

It’s been two weeks now since I arrived in Malawi but it feels like I’ve been here for much longer with all that I’ve managed to do in my time here so far.

While the first week was mostly spent getting up to speed and assisting with MAMN’s training session, the second week was all about getting down to business. On Monday, I joined MAMN at their regular all staff meeting where we discussed the team’s active projects and priorities for the upcoming week.

It became clear to me early on that the Network was in much need for a marketing plan as well as some help with their branding. Unfortunately, no one person assigned a full marketing role due to a severe lack of resources, leaving the marketing function virtually neglected.

Conducting a review of MMAN’s current marketing materials

It was evident that many of their materials were needing an update. Over the past week I put together a draft of a brand guide as well as started work on a framework for a marketing strategy based on internal consultations with staff and a thorough review of their planning documents. I even put some of my graphic design skills to use and created a brochure to promote MAMN’s next training session.

I made a lot of progress on my mandate at MAMN this past week but there’s a lot more work I need to do before my assignment is complete. This coming week will be my final week and it will surely be a busy one. The early part of the week will be spent meeting with some of MAMN’s member microfinance institutions in Blantyre and Lilongwe. These meetings will be my chance to get a better understanding of the specific needs of each institution to further inform the strategies that MAMN should pursue moving forward.

My last days in Lilongwe will be spent compiling all the insights I’ve gathered and translating them into concrete marketing tactics for MAMN in order to achieve one of their core strategic imperatives for the year — gaining increased visibility in the public space so as to make key stakeholders aware of the value that MAMN provides.

To support Uniterra’s development programs across the globe, I’ve committed to raising $7,000. You can contribute to my fundraiser by making an online donation. Just click on the link below to visit my fundraising page. You will get a tax receipt for a donation of $20 or more.
