We always have a good group of folks from New Mexico headed to SXSW to learn, make connections and deals — and have a little fun. I’ll be updating events and activities related to SXSW interactive in a few days, but for now, here’s a look at #SXSWEdu:

In her article in Psychology Today, Cathy Malchiodi states, “making art… may be as important to your health as balanced nutrition, regular exercise, or meditation.” It is critical to infuse the field of neuroasthetics, the idea of combining art with neuroscience to have an impact on health and wellbeing, into early education. During this panel, learn how art is essential to creating inter-connectivity in the brain to create long-term emotional and physical health benefits.

Lee Francis IV (Laguna) is the CEO of the comic book company Native Realities, which took top prize at the 2016 Creative Startups Accelerator in Albuquerque, and the National Director of Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers. Toy Hacking puts the students behind the curtain of consumer products, gets students active under the hood with toys they know as consumers. While the rest of the world spray paints wires pink to get girls into STEM, we empower our students to take control. Toy Hacking teaches electronics, CS, gears, drafting, sewing, as well as literacy rich documentation skills. This is a choice-rich, no kit, open-source, low-cost curriculum. Come play and learn with us, and bring it to your class tomorrow.

Sara Boucher is a geeky sixth year teacher in Los Lunas, New Mexico. Currently she is cultivating the next crop of super-geeks in her Robotics and Computer Programming classes at Los Lunas Middle School in Los Lunas, New Mexico. (Read more here.)

National Arts Networks and Stories of Impact #KenCenArtsEd

Hakim Bellamy, Beyond Poetry LLC, @HakimBe
Mario Rossero, SVPEducation, John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts @Mario_Rossero
https://schedule.sxswedu.com/2018/events/PP97372

Through a unique suite of national networks we work to remove barriers to equity and access in arts learning. From the strategic collective impact work of Any Given Child to a focus on our most struggling schools through Turnaround Arts, or through the community focus of our Citizen Artist Fellowship, our programs are targeted at combining problems of the field with compatible solutions that can be replicated. We will explore the networks and stories of impact from a selection of these programs.

As the inaugural Poet Laureate of Albuquerque, NM (2012–2014), Hakim Bellamy is a national and regional Poetry Slam Champion, and holds three consecutive collegiate poetry slam titles at the University of New Mexico. Bellamy has had his work featured on AlterNet, Truthout, CounterPunch and the nationally syndicated Tavis Smiley Radio Show. He is the on-air television host for New Mexico PBS’s ¡COLORES! Program. Bellamy holds an M.A. in Communications from the University of New Mexico, is the proud father of a 9 year-old miracle and is the founding president of Beyond Poetry LLC. (Read more here.)

I think that’s our best representation yet (but I may have missed some. If I did, please let me know)! Please consider attending if you can — and help spread the word. We’ll be posting more about NM folks and organizations heading to SXSW soon!
