Why I Lost Faith in Everything: The Poor Won’t Live to See UBI or Universal Healthcare

The truth is uncomfortable. Nobody likes realists and truth-tellers because we point out others’ blindspots and publicly check their privileges. We make everyone else feel ashamed for denying reality while offering nothing to vulnerable poor marginalized people with $0 incomes in need of help right the fuck now who aren’t getting anything except ignored, or posts of wishful thinking in our social media feeds—which are just as useless as “thoughts and prayers.”

Scott Santens devoted many years of research, data accumulation and writing in promoting Universal Basic Income and educating people about it who’ve been unsupportive of it. You’d think that after COVID disrupted countless lives economically, we’d already have a Universal Basic Income by now. Or at the very least, universal healthcare.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen the writing on the wall. And it was the most privileged of a very selfish, petty, vindictive middle class who put it there. I wish things were different. But if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. There will NEVER be a monthly dividend “for all of us.” Maybe for young, rich white able-bodied males, but not for anyone else and certainly not the poor, the disabled and the unloved old!
