Displaced Creator

Let’s talk about the frustrations and challenges of experienced digital content creators, marketers, and other creatives in the creator economy. So many less experienced people got there. They have thousands of followers, shares, claps, responses, and whatnot. But we don’t.

I published 101 articles on Medium within 2 months (from mid-August to mid-October in 2023). I posted a story almost every day, sometimes 2–3 stories per day. I published my articles in various Medium publications, including the bigger ones.

I’ve been on Medium since 2018, but haven’t been consistent. So this time, I decided to treat it seriously. I decided to be consistent, active, and successful.

Have I succeeded in my ‘Project Medium’? Well, here are the results.

What happened on Medium?

Yes, I published 101 articles on Medium within 2 months (from mid-August to mid-October in 2023). I also set up my own publication ‘Displaced Creator’.

My articles were about content marketing, creativity, writing tips, personal growth, mindfulness, poems about life, traveling, ChatGPT / AI, decision-making, and so on.

Most of my articles were published in diverse Medium publications, including the bigger ones like Illumination, Better Marketing, or the Writing Cooperative.

What did I publish on Medium?

A mix of short, medium-length, and long stories.

  • 67 short stories (up to 150 words)
  • 15 medium-length stories (up to +/- 800 words)
  • 19 long stories (over +/- 800 words long OR over 4–5 minute reads)

A few examples below (published in various Medium publications):

I published many more articles. As you can tell, I‘ve done quite a bit of work!

What are the results?

What happened after I published 101 articles on Medium within 2 months?

Not much. I got a number of extra visits, claps, and new followers. Not too many, though. I also earned a few bucks. Practically nothing, considering the amount of time and effort I had put in.

I don’t think these numbers/results (or the before-and-after situation) are significant enough for me to add the exact stats or screenshots. I don’t have any get-rich-quick advice, either.

Any good news? I attracted a number of visits from Google. I’m always flattered when I see organic traffic. After all, over 90% of pages get NO organic search traffic from Google, according to Ahrefs.

Over 90%. So I’m flattered.

It may be worth mentioning in my SEO gratitude journal!

What do I know about publishing on Medium?

Based on my results, not much. But I wouldn’t say I don’t know what I’m doing. I’ve been a digital content creator and strategist for about 10 years.

I know the art of content writing, SEO, and what it takes to drive thousands of organic visits to your content. I know enough about blogging and Google algorithms.

So I may not be a Medium expert. I believe, though, my digital marketing background should help me on my creative journey on this platform.

Hence, I can say I’m pretty disappointed.

What have I learned?

Patience, consistency, and persistence. I’ve practiced the difficult art (for me) of lowering my expectations. I’ve learned not to attach to these results (or attach less).

When it comes to creating/publishing content, I don’t seek validation as I’ve already managed to attract tons of organic traffic and leads working in the B2B space. So I don’t consider myself the worst content creator ever.

However, it is frustrating. It’s been tough to hit the publish button every day, sometimes a few times per day, not only on this platform.

Learning to cope with this frustration is a big lesson for me. I’ve put in a lot of effort, so it’s not ideal that only a few people have found or read my content.

At the same time, I do appreciate those who show their support. Because there are a few of you: thank you for your reads, claps, and comments. If you’re reading this, a big, big thank you. ❤️ YOU make my Medium journey worthwhile.

My Medium project: conclusion

Regarding numbers and earnings, my efforts on Medium have failed — no need to sugarcoat the facts.

Regarding experience and life lessons, I don’t regret it. I’d do it again.

What will be my next step?

I’m not sure. I also have two YouTube channels; one seems to be gaining traction (I’ve been super excited to discover my SEO knowledge helps increase the visibility of my videos).

I’ve also received numerous comments that viewers find my content useful. Well, maybe YouTube is my destiny!

In the meantime, I will keep posting on Medium, but I’m not sure about the frequency yet.

But who knows what will happen?

It’s easy to give up. It’s not easy to carry on. I like finishing articles about my struggles in the creator economy with my poem ‘Patience’ (I find it soothing). Here it is.

Patience

I want to have it all and I want to have it now.
I want to have it quickly, but I don’t know how.
I can’t wait any longer, my desires are strong,
I’m hungry, I don’t want anything to go wrong.

Be patient and take it easy, people tell me to my face,
It’s not about an overnight success or life being a race.
I’m not sure, though, I don’t want to waste my time,
Trying hard to make things happen is not a crime.

But I keep visualizing my desires and I see no results,
I expected it to be easier in the world of the so-called adults.
So maybe I will try to relax and have a little patience,
I will trust the process; after all, this wisdom is ancient.

Yes, it may take time and I may not achieve too much in a year,
But I can achieve more than I could dream of in about five years.
I have all the time in the world and I don’t really need it so badly,
But when it finally comes, I will savor it all slowly and gladly.
