Want to have your own robot companion to carry your luggage around for you? And give to charity at the same time? Well, your rather unusual and specific dreams have been answered with the Limited Edition (Red) Gita Robot unveiled for the annual (RED) Shopathon, which takes place on Monday, November 18th, 2019.

It’s certainly cute, we’ll give it that much. The Gita has been developed by Piaggio Fast Forward, which is a company set up by Piaggio, the large Italian manufacturer of scooters and motorcycles under their own brand name, plus Vespa, Gilera, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Derbi and Scarabeo.

What they have come up with first is the Gita, pronounced ‘jee-ta’, and Italian for short trip. The robot sherpa will follow you around carrying your items at a speed of up to 6mph for a run time for 4 hours on a fully charged battery. As long as your items weigh up to 40 pounds (just over 18kg), and fit in the 2630 cubic inch cargo space. Charge time is around 2 hours.

There are some more limitations — it can only run on flat surfaces, and the lid isn’t watertight. But it will handle up to 16% inclines and descents. But it’s really more about having a bag on wheels that will track you via the cameras and sensors to always be with you.

OK, so it’s not the most practical purchase in the world. Especially as it costs $3,250. But it’s certainly a conversation starter. The Gita also includes built-in music streaming and phone charging. And for the (RED) Shopathon, the limited edition (Red) Gita unveiled will include a $50 donation to the global fund for a diverse range of live-saving HIV/AIDS programs.

“Partnering with (RED) allows us to give people an incredible product that they feel even better about because of the impact the purchase will make to countless people living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. We are very proud of that.” said CEO Greg Lynn.

There are a lot of other products included in the Shopathon for those with a slightly smaller budget, and you can check them out here.
