There’s been a growing trend towards reviving the style of old racing games with modern features. And the latest example, Voidspeed Outlaw, looks like it could be pretty interesting.

Developed by Cydonian Games, based in Tallinn, Estonia, the upcoming release for the PC mixes the look of the classic Nintendo Mode 7 title F-Zero, with the weapons of Wipeout, to create something new and potentially fun.

As someone old enough to remember buying and playing both games at release (and still own boxed copies for the SNES and PlayStation 1 in my retro collection), that sounds like a fun mixture that’s been waiting to be made for a long time.

And having mentioned both the Wipeout-inspired Pacer, and the Virtua racing inspired Hotshot Racing in my highlights of 2020, it’s probably not too surprising that I’m intrigued by the new game.

So you get pseudo-3D with 2D pixel art, a storyline involving racing on Mars and the surrounding moons, and various speeders to tune and upgrade.

The game is planned for release on the PC at some point in 2021, and you can add it to your Steam Wishlist now.
