Named after psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger, this cognitive bias leads individuals with low ability in a particular area to overestimate their competence, while those with high ability tend to underestimate their skills. It’s a curious mix of ignorance and self-awareness — or the lack thereof.

Contrasting Effects on Juniors and Seniors

The Dunning-Kruger Effect often peaks at specific stages in a career or learning journey. When individuals are novices, their limited knowledge can make them overconfident because they are unaware of the complexities they have yet to encounter.
