“One of the biggest challenges anyone can face when starting a new business or launching a new product is marketing”

I asked marketing leaders from a few of Minnesota’s fastest growing startups in the following question.

“What’s the one piece of marketing advice you’d give to an early stage startup/founder that does not have a dedicated marketing person/team. Are there any hacks/tactics you’ve found effective? Any tools/resources you recommend?”

My biggest advice when you do hire someone for marketing [is] that you look for someone who is naturally curious and who displays behavior that indicates they always want to learn more and solve problems. They must be able to adapt quickly, and be okay with priorities shifting mid-project. I’d also recommend that the person be someone who can think strategically, but who is also willing to dive in and do the actual work. Like with all things startup-related, marketing for startups is about maximizing impact with the limited resources available, and you need a strategic leader who can figure out where to focus, but who is also willing and able to help execute.”[CLICK TO TWEET]

“Take the time to understand your customer and and their needs. Draw their journey on a whiteboard, from awareness to qualification to adoption, and understand what your customer is doing every step of the way. Call them. Email them. Humbly ask for their feedback. Send them a $10 gift card if you need to. Spending one hour a week reaching out to customers will help keep leadership strategically focused on what makes the company unique and valuable in the first place.” [CLICK TO TWEET]

“Break down your marketing to focus on small demographic groups inside your potential market and create content that specifically targets those groups individually. It is much easier to tackle small groups than your entire potential market.” [CLICK TO SHARE ON LINKEDIN]

“Distribution is equally as important as product. Entrepreneurs should experiment on their distribution channels to find product/channel fit as much as they experiment with their product to find product/market fit. Ideally, they’ve done that work prior to starting their company or building their product.”[CLICK TO SHARE ON LINKEDIN]
