The third guest on my podcast is 6-time serial entrepreneur Don Smithmier, CEO at GoKart Labs — a digital marketing agency.

Don was the most challenging and rewarding guest I’ve had to interview thus far.
The first reason being that he’s had several interviews with reputable outlets. As the host, I made it my responsibility to make sure that he gives a unique interview, one with unique content. VS. telling the same story twice using different outlets.
Secondly, Don is the CEO of a digital marketing agency. He’s worked with the press/media in the past, which means he’s got a general blueprint of how to handle us. I was afraid that his previous experience would get in the way of a genuine authentic conversation.
Turns out I was simultaneously right and wrong.
I was wrong to think that his experience working with press and media would get in the way of a genuine conversation. This was simply not the truth. Turns out I am pretty bad at conducting interviews and his experience with the media was crucial in seamlessly mitigating where I fell short.
I was right to be adamant on the idea that he shouldn’t give the same interview twice. This helped me listen more attentively which led me to ask questions I wouldn’t have otherwise.
