As of January 1, 2020, cannabis, a.k.a. marijuana, is legal in the State of Illinois for individuals 21 years of age and older. While marijuana is legal, it is still prohibited from possession, use, distribution, purchase or sale at school and at on or off-campus school functions in all forms. Given the change in state law, the Board and District have taken a few steps to address the change.

Information Session
During his Superintendent Report at the January 8th Board Meeting, Dr. Jeff Schuler reminded Board Members about and upcoming information session, Legal Marijuana: Now What?, on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. at Wheaton Warrenville South High School with Matthew Quinn, LCPC, CADC. Mr. Quinn will offer parents strategies to have conversations with their children of all ages about the new products available for sale in Illinois. Follow this link for more information. The City of Wheaton also produced a video with information about this new law that is available for all community members.

Student Handbook Change
The Board approved to post proposed changes to the Discipline and Athletic Code Prohibited Misconduct sections of the student handbooks. Modifications include the following:

Using, possessing, distributing, purchasing, soliciting illegal drugs or controlled substances, any produce containing THC or other cannabis derivatives, including, but not limited to, CBD, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, look-alike drugs and drug paraphernalia. Students who are under the influence are not permitted to attend school or school functions and are treated as though they had drugs in their possession.

We ask parents to consider attending the information session on January 28 so you can have an informed conversation with your child(ren) about this new law. While recreational marijuana may be legal for adults 21 and over, please know that marijuana is not allowed at school or off-campus school functions for anyone.

Policy Revision
The Board also posted revised policy 5:50 Drug- and Alcohol-Free Workplace; E-Cigarette, Tobacco, and Cannabis Prohibition for public review and comment.

For questions or to provide feedback on the proposed student handbooks and/or revised policy, contact Dr. Charlie Kyle at charles.kyle@cusd200.org or 630–682–2015. Both action items will be on the Board’s February 12, 2020 Meeting Agenda.
