What do you do when you have serious food allergies and you can’t enjoy sweet treats? Well… a group of students at Wheaton North started their own business, Allergenius Baking Company. After winning District 200’s Business INCubator Pitch Competition, the team of students won $15,000 at the National Business INCubator Pitch Competition earlier this summer. To honor their achievements, the Board of Education recognized the students, Maddie Cook, Josh James, Anya Ranjan, their parents, Wheaton North staff and community mentors Sheri Billing and Chris Dabovich.

The Allergenius Baking Company creates incredibly delicious baked goods that are free of the 14 most common food allergens. This student-founded business is officially up and running and they are accepting orders!

In the Business INCubator course, an authentic, collaborative entrepreneurship experience, student groups have the opportunity to create and fully develop their own product or service. In addition to classroom instruction, entrepreneurs and business experts serve as volunteer coaches and mentors, guiding student teams, enhancing the experience by providing advice in foundational business topics like marketing, finance and more. At the completion of the Business INCubator course, similar to the hit TV show Shark Tank, student groups compete for investment funds from the program’s Board of Advisors or “sharks”.
