South Chess Team Competes in National Tournament

The Wheaton Warrenville South High School chess attended the United States Chess Federation’s (USCF) National K-12 tournament from March 15th-17th at the Schaumburg Convention Center. It was a grueling three days that ultimately added up to a 44-hour commitment.

The students showed their toughness, dedication and mental acuity throughout the tournament and competed with the brightest chess minds from 35 different states.

Four students received trophies for their outstanding performances in their sections. Students Ryan Montsma (Sr.) tied for 3rd place in the 1600 rating section, Shea Smith (Fr.) tied for 5th place in the 1200 rating section, and in the 800 rating section Jack Vail (Jr.) tied for 3rd place and Samuel Wilson tied for 5th place.

Along with teammates Ben Achammer (Fr.), Evan Simon (So.), Cordell Bancroft (Jr.), Angel Tochimani (Sr.) and Ben Myung (So.), the Tiger Chess team played tough and ended the tournament having represented themselves and Wheaton Warrenville South befitting the proud Tiger Tradition.
