For Samsung, AI is a key issue in 2024. After making it the axis on which much of the Galaxy S24 family is based, the company has presented on Wednesday a wide range of household appliances, under the name BESPOKE AI, with which it takes the benefits of this technology throughout the house: from the fridge to the hoover.

This announcement coincides, coincidentally, with the fifth anniversary of the BESPOKE range, which has become an icon in Samsung’s catalogue of household appliances both for its quality and for its aesthetic and functional avant-garde.

Samsung’s new BESPOKE AI range is made up of dozens of new products, although it is important to note that not all of those presented will reach the European market. In fact, the company has organised three parallel events (Seoul, Paris and New York) in order to not only showcase its technological advances, but also to emphasise those devices that will reach each of the regions.

SmartThings, AI Home and Bixby: the three pillars of the new BESPOKE AI range.

A fundamental axis in this new range of devices is the SmartThings platform that the company has been promoting for years from all its divisions. This makes it possible to create synergies between different devices through their interconnection, remote control capabilities or other advanced functions. In other words: SmartThings makes it possible for individual devices to go one step further by being part of an ecosystem.

In the new BESPOKE AI appliances, integration with that platform is combined with a new 7-inch LCD display that Samsung has dubbed AI Home. Together, they open the door to a wide range of smart and advanced experiences. For example:

  • Thanks to the 3D Map View function, it is possible to create a three-dimensional view of the entire home, including the appliances in it. Once the map has been generated, users will be able to monitor and control the operation of all appliances from the same place. The company mentions two specific examples: being able to turn on the hoover while doing the laundry or controlling the air conditioning in other rooms without leaving the kitchen – thus keeping an eye on the pots and pans at all times.
  • The AI Home allows you to answer phone calls from different BESPOKE AI appliances, regardless of the room in which the mobile phone is located and without having to stop the user’s current task -doing laundry, cooking, etc.-.
  • This screen, as in other previous models from the brand, also allows you to play songs, access the internet, consult recipes, watch videos, etc. For example: you can play a video on how to make a recipe on the screen of the fridge itself, thus eliminating the need to have your mobile phone or tablet around to do so.

The BESPOKE AI range also features the Mobile Smart Connect function, which sends a notification to your mobile phone when it is near one of the brand’s smart appliances.

The interesting thing is that, from this alert, the user can execute different quick control actions, eliminating friction and simplifying the control process in everyday tasks.

On the other hand, the BESPOKE AI range welcomes a new version of Bixby that, as the company explains, makes use of generative AI to be smarter and more useful in the home. In particular, Samsung highlights a step forward in the naturalness with which conversations can be had with the assistant. For example: it is possible to ask it for compound commands such as “Turn on the air conditioning in Wind Free mode and tell me what the weather is like,” expect Bixby to understand the context and take action by simply telling it “the living room is damp” or ask for advice on what to do with certain foods.

All these functions open up a whole new world of possibilities in the home, but Samsung realises that not everyone has the knowledge to set up the devices in a painless way after purchase. That’s why the BESPOKE AI range features Calm Onboarding, which promises to simplify the registration process. And for security, all devices are supported by Knox Matrix, which protects user data at all times.

A range consisting of refrigerators, washing machines, hoovers, tumble dryers and induction cookers.

One of the most outstanding products is the Bespoke French Door refrigerator with AI Family Hub+. As well as having a large smart display for viewing recommended recipes, YouTube videos or listening to music, it is able to recognise food stored inside – using AI Vision Inside technology – and allows you to keep track of it via the SmartThings app.

The use of AI is also growing the Samsung Bespoke Jet Combo AI, a robot hoover that uses AI technology to more accurately identify humans, animals and more complex objects, such as wires or carpets, and act accordingly during the cleaning process.

Another eye-catcher is the BESPOKE AI Laundry Combo, a washing machine and dryer that not only combines both appliances in one, but also offers a number of intelligent functions. For example: it recommends an optimal cycle based on various parameters; it adjusts the washing and drying process according to the load to save water and detergent; and it can detect both the type of fabric and the level of soiling to act accordingly.

Samsung has also presented a new range of washing machines that stand out for their energy efficiency and incorporate technologies such as Bubble Shot, which «saves water and cycle time by pumping water from inside the drum and spraying it over the clothes», according to the brand.

And finally, Samsung has presented the BESPOKE Slide-In with AI Hub, a multifunctional induction cooker that attracts attention, among other things, for having an oven with a camera, which is accessible from anywhere in the world using the SmartThings app.

AI makes its way into the smart home

The BESPOKE AI appliances that Samsung has unveiled are not just about making everyday life easier or differentiating themselves from what rival brands are offering; from an innovation standpoint, they represent another step towards what we will find in the future connected home.

Some of the functions described were already present in previous models but have been improved by AI. Others are completely new. In any case, the interesting thing is that household appliances will also benefit from this new era of generative AI. And Samsung, although there is still a long way to go, has already set off in this direction.
