This Phenomenon Helped Me Gain ~100 Followers in One Day
I didn’t follow a single additional account yesterday, not even one single soul.
In fact, I probably already follow a few more accounts than I really should.
Despite all of that, I was able to gain roughly 100 new followers yesterday, and I have to attribute it to a phenomenon that you are probably familiar with.
It’s called the “Snowball Effect”, and it plays a major role in how follower counts grow over time.
I can’t even tell you the amount of time and energy that it used to take to add 100 followers in a day.
Now… well it comes more easily.
That ISN’T a testament to me, that’s a testament to math and to consistency.

We all start out as a relative unknown when we sign up for Medium.
There is no getting around the fact that it can feel like shouting into the void when you have only a few dozen followers.

The good news is that it doesn’t last forever. In fact, if you just keep pushing forward, you will ultimately end up reaching a point where you don’t have to push nearly as hard as you once did. Things will just start to happen, almost like magic!
A big part of what makes this work is an expanding network.
As you write more and as you form the genuine connections that we talk so much about, your work and name get distributed to a wider audience of people. Those people may then decide that they want to follow you as a result.
Then, as an additional bonus, you might get mentioned in there article, and that further gets your name out there.
Don’t worry, I have definitely noticed when people have done this!
Over time that network just grows and grows until it is feeding itself automatically.
Reaching My COMPLETE Audience
In addition to working on expanding my network, I have also recently been working on producing content for my entire audience.
Sure, I have produced plenty of content for the audience that happens to show up and be on Medium during the same hours that I am awake and active, but I was missing something.
The main thing that I was missing was any kind of outreach to people who live and work in different time zones.
I have plenty of followers and accounts that I subscribe to from other countries.
Why then was I not producing content for them at a time that worked best for them?
The truth is….
I just didn’t give it enough thought. I was too eager to press the publish button and launch my next piece of content out there.
No more!
Now, I try to make sure to have at least one piece of content for audiences outside of the time zone that I live in.

Get out there, create content for all of your audience, and keep working on expanding your network.
