Ever wanted to know what daily life in a tech consultancy looks like?
In our latest blog series, we chat with Natalia Tapia, Talent Acquisition Lead at DiUS about her role and what it’s like to experience DiUS.
Why did you decide to join DiUS?
I wanted to work for a company that helped foster a sense of belonging and that cared about making a difference, with a team of people who valued and respected one another, helped each other grow, and lived their values in all they do. It seems I hit the jackpot with DiUS!
What are some of the challenges you face in your role?
In a labor short market, hiring top talent has been impacted in more ways than one over the last few years, and it isn’t getting better overnight, not to forget that technical skills were already high in demand, to begin with.
It’s not about the best offer anymore, there’s so much more that encompasses a decision in which our candidates choose to change employers. Health and wellbeing, work-life balance, and non-cash benefits are among the many factors that we, as top employers, must get right if we want even the slightest chance of hiring great people for our teams.
What are you most passionate about?
People and tech! Maybe my role gives that away? For me, there’s nothing more exciting than coaching and advising people on those life-altering, job-related decisions, whilst still being exposed to all the latest and greatest technologies of our modern-day world!
Are you working on any personal projects at the moment?
At the heart of my passion lies my new commitment to join the co-organising team of one of Australia’s most prominent networking events, affectionately known as “BeerOps.” These events serve as vibrant platforms that bring together professionals, technologists, and enthusiasts from the tech industry. Through these events, we foster a vibrant community where ideas flow freely, collaborations flourish, and lasting connections are forged. I take immense pride in being part of this dynamic process, facilitating opportunities for knowledge sharing, career growth, and industry-wide networking.
Beyond the realm of many networking events, my dedication extends to mentoring youths and IT graduates across schools and universities. Recognising the transformative impact that mentorship can have on young minds, I seize every chance to offer guidance, support, and inspiration to the next generation of aspiring professionals. By sharing my experiences, insights, and expertise, I aim to empower these individuals to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the tech industry, equipping them with the necessary tools to shape their own success stories.
Embracing diversity and inclusion is also an integral part of my ethos, which is why I actively engage in various diversity accelerator programs. These initiatives serve as catalysts for change, working towards creating equitable opportunities and fostering an inclusive environment within the tech sector. By actively participating in these programs, I aim to break down barriers, challenge biases, and amplify underrepresented voices. Through collaborative efforts and shared determination, we can pave the way for a future where diversity thrives, innovation flourishes, and societal progress knows no bounds.
Do you have any advice for someone considering a career in tech?
If you’re considering a career in tech, my advice to you is to embrace curiosity, continuous learning, and resilience. The tech industry is a dynamic and ever-evolving field that demands a passion for exploration and a hunger for knowledge. Stay curious, seek out new technologies, and be open to learning from diverse sources. Develop a growth mindset that embraces challenges as opportunities for growth and be prepared to adapt to a rapid pace of change. Surround yourself with a supportive community, network with industry professionals, and seek mentorship to guide you on your journey. Remember that setbacks and failures are inevitable, but it’s through perseverance and resilience that you’ll overcome obstacles and reach new heights. Embrace the thrill of solving problems, seize opportunities to contribute and make a difference, and never stop pushing the boundaries of your own potential. The world of tech is filled with possibilities, and by pursuing a career in this field, you’ll have the chance to shape the future and leave your mark on the world. That said, let me leave you with one of my favourite all-time quotes: “It’s not a faith in technology. It’s faith in people.” Steve Jobs, Co-founder of Apple.
