Don’t Fall for the Promotion “Shell game”

Part 12, Deny, Deny, Deny

I have some bad news for you. Just knowing how promotions really happen is not going to help you. Imagine Wade confronting one or both of the street hustlers. Would that have resulted in him winning $20?

In the same way, accusing people who hold your career in their hands of bias, unconscious or otherwise or even the lesser offense of promoting someone based on perceived affiliation instead of pure performance is a seriously career-limiting move. This is one of those “even if you win, you lose” type of scenarios — a Pyrrhic victory.

Pretty much no one ever in the history of work, when confronted by someone of making biased decisions has said, “Thank you for helping me see the error of my ways. I will strive to do better. Congratulations, you got the promotion!”

It. Doesn’t. Work.

Tune in tomorrow for the next installment…
