Today is the third of nine days for our Novena of Renewal. In case you missed the first day, or want to learn more about novenas and saints, here is a link to the first day’s prayers.

Day 3: St. Joan of Arc’s Courage

Bible Passage:

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.” — Psalm 28:7 (NIV)

Introduction:

Saint Joan of Arc was born in Domrémy, France, in 1412. She is well known for challenging gender norms while embracing a call from God to fight in the Hundred Years’ War. She was a fierce warrior and inspired her countrymen with her courage and determination. Victories at Orléans and Patay earned her the title “The Maid of Orléans,” but her mission and service were riddled with betrayal and persecution. In 1431 she was tried and executed for heresy.

Even in the face of persecution, Joan remained faithful, refusing to renounce or betray her divine mission. She was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1920. Joan of Arc’s example continues to inspire millions worldwide, symbolizing courage, persistence, and unwavering faith in pursuing a divine calling.

“I am not afraid… I was born to do this.” — Saint Joan of Arc

Prayer:

Dear Saint Joan of Arc, we ask for your intercession. Your life epitomizes the courage to defy norms and embrace a calling that defies human expectations. Just as you fearlessly followed your calling, we ask for your guidance and strength to break free from the stigma and misunderstanding that society imposes upon us addicts and alcoholics.

(Expand the prayer to seek Saint Joan of Arc’s intercession, asking for the courage to break free from societal norms, embrace our true selves, and persevere in the journey of recovery.)

Faithful and Steadfast God, through Saint Joan of Arc’s intercession, grants us the courage to challenge norms, embrace our true selves, and navigate the journey of recovery with course and determination. As we endure the early stages of recovery, empower us to trust our inner voices, follow our convictions, and fearlessly confront the obstacles in our path.

May Saint Joan of Arc’s example and spirit inspire us as we meet recovery with self-acceptance. With humility, we seek your favor as we take these steps toward breaking free from all that inhibits our freedom.

Charge for Continued Action:

Reflect on Saint Joan of Arc’s extraordinary courage in being a leader and radical example of faithfulness and embrace her example as you continue your recovery journey. Challenge expectations, trust your inner strength, and remember that your true calling is not bound by the limitations imposed by others.

Glory to the Creator,
Redeemer, and Sustainer,
As it was in the beginning,
Is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen.
